CMP/ENG 2800

Fall 2019

Response Paper #1

Select ONE of the following topics for your response paper:

1. Choose one of the following themes and write a short essay comparing two of the fables/tales we read in relation to this theme. Tell me first what this theme represents (your thesis) and then tell me which stories you will use to show the representation of this theme (your sources for your proof). Give me examples from the text (citing with page # when necessary) which support your thesis.

  • Temptation
  • Trust
  • Family
  • Sacrifice
  • Greed
  • Honesty

2. Choose a short scene or selection from Lysistrata or The Bhagavad-gita and explain how and why it speaks to readers from the 21st century. What is the main message of this selection? What can you relate this to in modern times? Who (individual or group) would get the most from an understanding of this text? Why? Do a close reading of this selection of text as part of your analysis and comparison.

Guidelines: 1½-2 pages. Size 12, Times New Roman, Standard Margins, Double-spaced body of text. Do not double-space your name, class, etc.

Be concise and get your proof out there. Brainstorm first, and then write. Have an introductory paragraph (where your thesis will be) as well as a concluding paragraph. This means your paper should be at least 3 paragraphs long (but likely 4 or more). Edit for grammar and spelling.

Body paragraphs should NOT discuss the two subjects individually. Rather you will search for common aspects of your theme between them and make that the topic for your paragraph in which you discuss BOTH stories as they relate to that aspect/theme.

You will be graded on your mechanics as well as your content.

Write two drafts! You have plenty of time to submit the final draft, do yourself a favor!

Due on blackboard by 11:59pm on September 27th

NO EXCEPTIONS. EVEN ONE MINUTE LATE AND YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT!!! My advice? Submit it a day early.

Response Paper # 1
“The Hare's self-sacrifice” emphasizes sacrifice and honor where the hare becomes food for the beggar and the hare was not compelled to do so. Bodhisattva was in the form of a hare, and after sacrificing himself Sakka, the king of gods rewarded him for being selfless. In “The Monkey's heroic self-sacrifice”, monkey sacrifices himself, which helps the other monkeys to flee from human attacks. Buddha was in the form of a monkey, and he led other monkeys to safety from the archers, and they bestowed his honor for his self-sacrifice. The hare and monkey sacrifice themselves to save others as they are selfless, their commitment to save others and giving back, which serve as moral examples in both stories.
Sacrifice is an expression of selflessness and compassion, where the animals engage in heroic self-giving to save others. The hare emphasized to his three friends the monkey, jackal, and otter that giving alms was important for the hare and this was part of the moral law (1298). The hare was keen on observing the holy day, which was also a fast-day telling his friends to feed any beggars. The heroic monkey‘s actions allowed him to save his friends who would otherwise have suffered pain being hunted down by the archers, and the monkey’s sacrifice allowed him to serve others (1301). People are rewarded for selflessness as is the case of the hare and monkey whose actions save the other animals.
Commitment not to harm others is a form of liberation rather than suicide and not suicide where the hare and monkey save others. Both the hare and the monkey show generosity an...
