A Brief Guide to Writing from Readings defines a Response Essay as an opportunity for writers to “examine, explain, and often defend [their] personal reaction to a reading,” and are evaluated based on the writer’s ability to “demonstrate an understanding of the reading and how clearly [they] explain [their] reactions” (97, emphasis mine). For this Response Essay, you are expected to write 4-5 full pages clearly identifying and supporting with detail your “response” to the readings about Native American mascots. To accomplish this, you must engage in honest and thoughtful self-reflection, and then be able to cite and explicate specific passages from texts we discussed in class, as well as any relevant texts you may find in your own research. You are required to incorporate at least three sources into the Response Essay, and you must use proper methods of incorporation and the rules of M.L.A. citations in order to do so. 

 

There are numerous approaches to this kind of essay, including (but not limited to) the following:

 

  1. Choosing a particular theme or repetition of certain phrases that stood out to you.

  2. Exploring your reaction to a new perspective that you had not previously considered.

  3. Examining your personal background and how that influenced your reaction to a piece of writing.

  4. Examining a passage that initially confused you/compelled you to learn more about the subject, and why.

It is important to note that the “response” is only as important as the “why?” when it comes to writing successful Response Essays. As you brainstorm, identify particular themes or passages that offer a chance for in-depth analysis and examination. While this is meant to be a sincere reflection of your response to textual productions, it is also a formal piece of writing, and must be coherent and focused. Also, make sure that your final draft is polished and carefully edited.

 

You will be expected to write the Response Essay in a style appropriate to a personal-position paper.  Your audience will be your teacher and your classmates, and the paper will serve as a means of introducing yourself as a technology user.  Therefore, your tone can be more relaxed, but it must also be both respectful and respectable.

Response to the stereotype about the Redskins name and their relationship with Native Americans
Debates on the relationship between Native American mascots and Native people have arisen over the years. Many people believe and say that sports teams with Native American mascots preserve various stereotypes against Native people. The protesters think that mascots are a threat to their peace and welfare in society (Angle). Consequently, they continue holding on to various negativities against the mascots. On the other hand, supporters argue that the teams are harmless and they symbolize respect (Angle). Also, the supporters say that the reverence portrayed by mascots honor the history of Americans. I have found myself against the mascots, believing that what the protesters say is true for a long period of time. In addition, my false belief that mascots cannot bear respect triggered more reasons for the perpetuation of Natives. However, my perception has changed after reading an article entitled Sorry, Redskins fans: Native American mascots increase racial bias on The Washington Post, explaining the origin of the controversy and the truth about the mascots (Angle). This information has equipped me with a wide range of ideas, changing my perception towards the mascots.
First, reading the article gives a great overview of the redskins and the major cause of the controversy against the mascots. The ideas turn my ideas and thoughts against the mascots and I know that my belief and perceptions towards the teams were all wrong (Angle). I have to mention that I was confused and intrigued at the same time in what others said and believed in, without the idea of maybe researching and knowing the truth about the issue. I have learned that many people are lured into holding on to various stereotypes not because they are true but because other people make them look factual (Angle). The idea is explained by the wrong perception I knew but could not support for any reason. I have learned that the origin of elicitations like boycotts, protests and lawsuits against the redskins is the name of the team. The knowledge left me with a lot of questions to the protesters, possibly not remembering that they could be lacking the ideas I have achieved to believe otherwise. Does the name of a person or a group of individuals reflect or mirror their behavior or character? Should be people believe in fantasies and their thoughts against someone or something? Is performing a study to know something or someone better before criticizing of creation of judgment a difficult task? My experience disagrees with the questions and the only answer I can give is no, not because my stance against the mascots has changed but because I have gained distinct knowledge about the redskins, one of the sports teams.
In addition, the Washington Post survey over last spring reveals that 90% of the Native Americans were not offended by the Redskins name. The survey reveals that the victims in the controversy do not hold any negativity against the mascots. Could they have known the stereotypes and still stayed calm about the issue?
