Report on professional interview. Day to Day Job Duties
SUBJECT: REPORT ON PROFESSIONAL INTERVIEW
You are being asked to prepare a report based on an interview you conduct with a professional in your major field of study. This individual may or may not be known to you; you may need to seek out contacts through your academic advisors, by looking in the Yellow Pages and making telephone inquiries, or by returning to your hometown and interviewing a professional you have known or worked with. The interview may not be with a family member.
Here are the specifications for the interview report:
Due: To be determined
Length: Three-four typed pages (750-1000 words)
Topic: The professional interview should accomplish two things: 1) it should provide the reader with an understanding of what is involved in the professional's day-to-day and overall professional life and career, and 2) it should indicate what role clear writing and communication skills play in the professional field, both in terms of entering the profession and being successful in the profession over the long haul.
Your interview should begin with an introduction that includes the overall results of the interview. It should then proceed to support the overall results with direct quotations from the interviewee.
Purpose: 1) To show students in a particular major the reality of life in their profession, and
2) to emphasize the importance of good writing and communication skills in their major.
Audience: Upper class students in your major, and others considering the benefits of becoming a more proficient writer.
Format: A traditional interview/report format, using proper quotations. This paper is most closely related to a successful newspaper or magazine-style interview.
This assignment will be discussed in more detail during class.Remember these general rules for this assignment: • Keep your eye on the BALANCE between direct quotations and summary (about half and half). • Keep yourself OUT of the interview. Set your person up to speak. Do not say WHEN ASKED. Instead, ASSERT a situation and then let them speak.• Look at quotation marks, punctuation, and attribution (i.e, “I love my job,” he said.)• Remember to use short paragraphs.• Keep in mind your audience is upper class students in your major. In other words, they’ll want to know the same things you do.• Remember that you want to make your person sound good, using their words in the spirit in which they were intended.The way we tried to come up with questions and organize them went something like this:We’ll open the interview with some sort of story or anecdote, or tell something about the person’s BACKGROUND (i.e., what is their job, and how did they get there? ROLE OF WRITING• What do you write?• Who reads what you write?• Do you write for different audiences?• What do you read? Who writes that?• Do you write for the same audience all the time? COMPENSATION & BENEFITS• What is an average starting salary in this industry?• What kind of raises come with time and successes?• Is it a reliable industry going forward?• What about benefits? Health? 401(k)? Vacation?• Any other benefits or bonuses?You might conclude by asking “What advice would you have for someone entering this field?”None of this is set in stone – I just want you to see the WRITING PROCESS in action. Here we have considered PURPOSE, AUDIENCE, GATHERING INFORMATION, and ORGANIZATION. So once we get our interview done, we’ll be ready to DRAFT and then REVISE. All of our assignments will work this way.
We have decided to not do our mock interview since I will be out on Thursday, so plan to conduct your interview and have a draft for our next class, a week from today, when we will have our peer review.

It is in very rare circumstances that students happen to conceive the realities of the real world, particularly in the workplace. They also think that education is the primary tool that will lead them straight to the careers of their choice. This thought is reminiscent in most of my colleagues whom I have held a couple of conversations with them and gained profound deductions from them. However, the noble truth is only realized when one has the opportunity to view it from different angles. Fortunately, I had the chance to engage in a deep conversation with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a telecommunications company. The company’s name is withheld according to the privacy and confidentiality wishes of this prominent person.
Bob, a fictitious name, bears a significant responsibility of ensuring that everyday operations smoothly without a glitch. Bob was raised in Neasden, north-west London by a single mother. Back then, St. Raphael’s estate was among the toughest estates in England because of the violence that prevailed in the place. Having no idea of his real father, Bob relied upon the ideas and opinions of peers as well as the advice of his mother to progress with life. Fortunately, his mother and teachers at Vernon House Special School succeeded in streamlining his behavior only that life was quite challenging for him. Bob made relentless efforts in ensuring that his education was up to par and later joined Imperial College, London. He also attended Geneva Business School to improve on his business acumen. In the end, he is thankful to his mom and teacher. In the latter, he remembers that his teacher had to reprimand him when he was 10 and told him that “by the time you are 20, you are either going to be in a great university or in prison.” At the time and more so age, these were not the best words, but certainly they changed his life for the better.
Day to Day Job Duties
Based on previous experiences in modern society, children who are raised in tough environments grow up to become very responsible citizens because they are more empathetic and understand the struggles of whom they lead and serve. Also, this could be the sole reason that has underlined Bob’s rise to his prominent role of leading a giant organization with a massive number of shareholders. I asked Bob to describe his duties and responsibilities focusing on his daily objectives, his typical day, and his relationship with employees.
“I agree to your initial conclusion that kids raised in rough neighborhoods are exceptional at what they do. However, this is never a discriminatory remark because there are also those raised in better places and still possess exceptional leadership attributes. On the other hand, those that are faced with significant challenges and surrender to them are poised to do great things.
