Here is the prompt from our professor:
1) Last week, we discerned the difference between learning and education, or studying (e.g. passive vs active, existential vs institutional, etc), namely in that, while the latter can be easily mistaken as the former, learning in and of itself is concerned with a way of being, of living with oneself and with others. In that sense, learning requires a certain kind of desire or fervor, an openness to embrace the world in all its colors and textures, as well as its deepest contradictions. In that sense, what role does understanding have in this ever-renewing process of learning? What is the relationship between learning and understanding? How are they different? How is understanding associated with the position of the “gentleman”? What are the dispositions of a man or a woman of understanding? Is understanding, or knowledge for that matter, something that we can “possess”?
2) At the same time, we have yet to fully articulate the nature of the problem (the moral and social reality of one’s time, for instance) that learning concerns itself with. If learning is an active mode of being, like we said, what does it do for us? Does it unveil a “truth”? Does it unveil anything at all? Should we even expect for learning to “do” something for us all?
3) What are the differences between learning and studying? What does Confucius suggest about how to put what we have learned and studied into practice? What do you think the role of social classes play in those practices and why?
4) Pick one or several quotes from Confucius and explain: what part of “learning” is in it, what is its purpose, and what will your practices be—explain why.

Learning is an activity and acquiring knowledge and skills through practice, experience, studying, and being taught (De Houwer et al. 632). It means that learning is a continuous process where a person acquires a new understanding of things, knowledge, skills, values, and preferences. According to Confucius's teachings, learning equips people with skills to peacefully co-exist with others through understanding situations (Watson 8). The world is better when it is peaceful. It is the reason why Confucianism is vital in learning arts rather than martial arts. Learning shapes who we are and how lives are in the world. Indeed, a person behaves collectively, the way he or she learned while growing up.
In The Analects of Confucius, a gentleman has been used symbolically to represent a person who has taken learning seriously and applies it daily. He is a person who has upheld all the values that learning provides that include respect to leaders. Watson (21) gives an example of a gentleman who is respectful and does all he can to serve his parents and stands to what he says. He continues to say that even if the person did not attend any school, that person is learned. Therefore, it is correct to say that learning is not a process that is only acquired through going to school.
