Rebellion and Conspiracy.
George Orwell sheds some light on a totalitarian system of governance which, he sees in the future but to our past. In his book, 1984 he introduces Winston, a member of the ruling party who is somewhat tired of the regime. Like all the other oppressive regimes present today, there must be people in the regime who feel that the country would do better with an alternative government and that is exactly the type of person Winston was. Certain actions and events must be exhibited for a change of regime to be effected. Winston knows too well that the party is a hard nut to crack owing to its surveillance system but nonetheless he sets out to try his luck. Consequently, rebellion and conspiracies are witnessed in his pursuit to overthrow the ruling Party.
The act of Winston and Julia falling in love is a show of rebellion to the Party. Winston said to Julia “We’ve been lucky, but it can’t last much longer”. Both of them knew that the party had forbidden such acts but they could not resist the urge to be with one another. It was difficult to end things just yet when they both had a common enemy, the Party. Love is critical for Winston as it conjures up some of his past memories and brings the human nature back to him. For the working class to forge a successful rebellion to the Party, love had to exist amongst them. Love makes people loyal to each other rather than the ideas that they are given.
