Response for Tim O’Brien: The Things They Carried.
The story titled “The Things They Carry” by Tim O’Brien narrates the things soldiers carry in the war both tangible and intangible things. Some of the intangible things the author describes includes Jimmy Cross who was the lieutenant of the army and had his internal issues. Jimmy was preoccupied by thoughts of Martha, his girlfriend (O'Brien 1). This is interesting since he thinks about the letter, which he wrote to her. He wonders whether Martha was still virgin or not, and he also think about how much he loves her. I think his narration made it easier to understand the emotional toll the war had on the soldiers.
Tim O’Brien introduced other characters by describing the tangible things they carry. Henry Dobbins carries additional food, a hunting hatchet, and his girlfriend’s pantyhose (O'Brien 2). I think these soldiers rely on the physical objects of their loved ones as a memento to help them cope with the challenges of war....
