The Qualities of Good Writing
Writers ought to use to use writing skills to be persuasive and engaging to ensure cohesiveness, and this requires one to have good language skills. Both reading and writing are related while using good words consistently improves the quality of writing. Effective writing is like interpersonal communication, as the writer needs to connect with the readers. This then requires one to use a good structure to ensure clarity, as the writer shows what they mean through the logical organization. A non-fiction essay must have three essential elements to engage the readers and convince them with what they read, including the hook, flow, transitions and coherence as well as using facts and details to support ideas.
Writers use effective hooks to connect the introduction with the other paragraphs and keep the reader interested. The introductory paragraph then integrates the hook, thesis and agenda. Since the hook is an attention grabber, it can enhance the writing, where surprising information attracts the readers’ attention. This may also include using descriptive words, quotations, figurative language, and unexpected data. However, this should be supported with sentence fluency, as the hook alone is not enough when the writing fails to support the idea development. Using an engaging strategy to hook the reader’s interest motivates them to read and find what is written, but it should also be appropriate for the writing. However, this does not mean that the introductory paragraph should contain too much information, but a writer should rather hint what readers are to expect. An example of a good hook is from the article “Getting a Second Wind”, this article started with “Korinne came home from eighth grade, found her father’s revolver in his closet, and fired a bullet into her skull (Reilly 87), the author started the article with a tragic news that make the reader compelled to read to see what happened.
