Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice has significantly been lauded as a classic of English literature. The novel is a romantic story – a narrative that discusses the chaotic relationship between Bennet, daughter to a country gentleman, and Darcy, a wealthy landowner. Most experts have commended the author's continuous use of biting wit and above all, a fantastic delineation of characters to portray the societal structure; norms, values, stereotypes, etc., at the time. This present discussion purposes of assessing and analyzing the novel – determine the themes that the author uses to pass across their message to the target audience.
Pride and prejudice as a whole is a remarkable aesthetic reaction to a variety of contemporary societal constraints. The societal issues, in this case, allude to a whole set of pressures. These can be economical or marital or, even worse, the ugly atmosphere of overpopulated social places. Additionally, even though Mrs. Bennet can be unbearable at times, she is an accurate representation of a much bigger cause, which is even more 'unbearable.'
Austen's art piece follows a linear and chronologically ordered plot structure. The protagonist of the story is obviously, Bennet. The central conflict of the narrative revolves around Elizabeth Bennet and her encounters while looking to find a suitable companion yet still faced with numerous obstacles –mostly by social traditions and her lack of self-awareness. As such, most of the antagonists that Bennet encounters further make more obstacles to her dream marriage. Her antagonists fall into two categories; those who threaten her future dreams by forcing her to marry the wrong person and those who are against her marriage to Darcy, the aristocrat.
Despite looking like a simple romantic story, Pride and Prejudice tackles some of the most deep-rooted issues at the time using themes such as love, feminism, marriage, family, etc. The significance of the family as the central theme of the novel is seen immediately at the onset of the story; the famous first statement, "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife."
