1 How does the story, The Bog Girl, by Karen Russell classify as post-modern fiction?Would you put it into any other additional category as well? Which? Why or why not?
According to Matos, a post-modernist literature is mostly characterized by “skepticism and rejection, particularly the rejection of cultural progress, and even more so, the implementation of universalizing theories or grand narratives”. In line with the article written by Russell, I believe that the article is post-modernist as could be seen in the persistent use of rhetoric and sarcasm in order to point out where our society already is (mostly the flaws), especially when it comes to the things that we take for granted.
One example would be the part of the story when the ‘policemen relaxed when they found out that the girl was not a recent murder victim.’ This could be related to the “desensitized” view of our society today, when it comes to murder and other criminal acts. Aside from this, other examples were shown in the article that characterizes our own society’s view on crime and morality.
Aside from this examples, I don’t think that this article is any other than a post-modern fiction. This is because the use of words are not too straightforward and the theme presented is something which is mainly intended to criticize today’s society.
