Susan Glaspell 1882–1948
Born in Davenport, Iowa, Susan Glaspell took a degree in philosophy from Drake University before becoming a newspaper reporter in Des Moines. She turned her play Trifles, based on a murder case she covered on the job, into a widely anthologized short story, “A Jury of Her Peers.” She married a freethinker who also believed in free love and unfettered drinking, making her life with him difficult. The couple moved to the East Coast, where they founded the Provincetown Players, an experimental theater group. Glaspell won the 1931 Pulitzer Prize for her play Alison's House, which depicted the life of Emily Dickinson. She said she promoted “all progressive movements, whether feminist, social, or economic.”

The Quilt
The symbolism that is used on the play at the end is one that brings to the attention of the audience an element that is quite interesting. Largely the men in the play are not concerned with the trivial matters of the scene, however, this is a big mistake and one that would have solved the murder. The women on the other hand were very keen on the scene and they noticed the dead bird.
The symbolism used in this case of the quilt and the knot are supposed to show the innocence or guilt of Minnie. However for the men they do not get the meaning as they are looking for the logic and structure in the scene. While the answers are right in the kitchen they go out into the bedroom and even check the windows for any signs of forced entry.
For the women, this is a rather tricky situation in which they could easily give away the reason that they are tensed up. They are trying to conceal the fact that, they are hiding the evidence that could easily send Minnie to jail. The symbol of the knot is largely used to refer to the act of killing the husband.
