Be sure to annotate your copy of the poem to justify and support your answers. Remember, your literary conclusions MUST be rationalized by the poetic language. (Use one “Poetry Note Tracking” sheet for EACH poem) Poem Title: ‘Facing It’ Theme: The poem relates to the horrors of war the writer is experiencing Speaker: A Vietnam War survivor as he reflects on the war times (Schatzie). Narrative & Lyrical: The poem is in form of a story about the images the writer still has about the war that took place in Vietnam. Tone: The poem passes a sad tone of the effects that the way had on the victims, which includes the writer. At the beginning of the poem we can see the writer fighting the tears in his eyes (Schatzie). Diction (denotation & connotation): There is a great diction in the poem, with direct references and some indirect reference such as where the writer refers to blood as strokes of a brush and the red bird. Imagery & Image patterns: Imagery in the poem is expressed where the writer talks about his letter names written in smoke. The writer also talks about the red bird’s wings when referring to blood. Figures of Speech: Metaphor: I am stone, I am flesh: In all of them he directly relates himself to other objects. Simile: My clouded reflection eyes me like a bird of prey, find my own in letters like smoke: In the two examples he likens/compares two items using the word like. Hyperbole: Pale eyes looking through mine: In this example he illuminates the act of a simple glance. Understatement: The stone lets me go: Although he makes it look easy, the names on the wall have an immense effect on him as they awaken the war memories (Schatzie). Synecdoche : The stone: This is used to refer to the many victims’ names that were written on the dark granite wall. Metonymy: The word stone is used to refer to the wall of a monument. personification: The stone lets me go: Is a good example of how the writer gives the stone wall life. Symbol: I am a window: Is symbolic of the hollow space of an open window as the wounded solder looks through him.
