Analysis of a Poem and a Song Containing Figures of Speech

Essay Instructions:

Write an essay of 800 to 1,000 words using your analysis of one or more of the poems we have studied in class as a basis for examining the poetic qualities of a popular song lyric of your choice. Consider the poetic devices, structures, and techniques we have studied in one or more of these poems, and use these examples to identify and analyze similar devices, structures, and techniques in your chosen song. You must therefore choose your song carefully. It should be a complex lyric, one which displays some poetic qualities that you recognize from your study of these poems. The emphasis in this comparison will be on similarities, but feel free also to point out differences. In the process of this analysis, you should also make some connections to the overall themes, structures, and meaning conveyed in the song.
Your essay should contain:
1. an introductory paragraph that introduces your song and concludes with a thesis statement that makes an assertion about your song as it relates to the poem(s) you will use in your analysis
2. two or more paragraphs of analysis in which you
a. present and discuss these points of similarity
b. tie your analysis to the larger themes, ideas, and structures of your song and
c. draw conclusions about how these features contribute to the general meaning and/or overall effect of the song
3. an appendix containing the full text of your chosen lyric, together with the name of the recording artist, the song writer (if different than the recording artist), and the album it comes from, if applicable.

Analysis of a Poem and Song
The poem chosen for the analysis is called, “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love” by Christopher Marlowe and the song chosen is “Not with Haste” by Mumford and Sons. Both of them share some similarities that can be observed when one is reading the poem or singing the song. One of those similarities is the way in which they have a rhyme that seems to be similar. Also, the meaning of the song and the poem is similar for both of them present to the reader an image of the person who is not willing to give up on love even though they have gone through some challenges in their life. Imagery has been used in both to bring out the theme of the song and the poem which is hope. Imagery has also been used in both cases as a way of persuading the lover to come and be with the persona.
In the first stanza of both the song and the poem, the persona begins by informing the reader that they are persuading someone to come and be with them by making the reader visualize the place where they are staying. In the last two lines of the poem it says, ‘That Valleys, groves, hills, and fields, Woods, or steepy mountain yields:' In these lines, the persona creates an image of the rural area where they are staying beautifully. Similarly, in the song, the last two lines have also been used to show how beautiful the eyes of their lover are by likening them to the bright light. It says, ‘So keep my love, my candle bright". By reading the first stanzas of the poem and the song, one can easily recognize the intended message that the persona is trying to present to us in both cases which is the way in which they are in love with the beloved.
Alliteration is also observed in both the poem and the song. As mentioned earlier, the use of the alliteration patterns in the song and the poem help to create a rhyme scheme that makes the poem and the song to become so interesting. In the last stanza of the poem, the first sentence says, 'The Shepherds’ Swains shall dance and sing”. The sound /s/ has been used to create alliteration. In the song, in the second stanza, the first line, it says, ‘And We will be Who we are.’ The sound /w/ has been used to create a rhythm within the song. The structure of both the song and the poem is almost similar in that there are four short lines in each of the stanzas which makes it easier for the reader to identify the message within a short time in each of the stanzas.
In both poems, the theme of love has prevailed, and the theme has been presented in such a way that the voice in the poem and the song use enticements to woo the lover. In the poem, the speaker is urging the lover who stays in an urban environment to come and stay with them in the countryside. He uses various enticements to portray the countryside as one of the best places and perhaps to give the lover a reason why they need to stay with them in the countryside. The voice says that the...
