Persepolis And Watchmen Summary

Essay Instructions:

First, if it is possible please use the comments to revise the draft, I am aware that for some writers this will be difficult, you will not lose points if the peer responses do not lend themselves to incorporation into your essays. But many, perhaps most, of the responses will provide good, helpful comments and suggestions that should be employed and credited.
Notes regarding successful essays:
--- The topics given are general, large TOPICS. They are not arguments. You must narrow down your chosen topic and construct an argument around it.
--- You will also need a solid, coherent thesis around which to build your essay (in other words, you should take your ideas, inspired by the topics listed above, and make them into one clear argument).
--- Your essay must have a clear and arguable thesis. Phrases such as “I will explore . . .” “I will examine . . .” and “I will compare . . .” are not part of valid, arguable thesis statements.
--- You must use specific details from the texts, including direct quotations, in your essay.
--- The paper must have an introduction, supporting body paragraphs, and a conclusion, and it should be written in formal language.
--- Do NOT write the ‘hamburger’ essay (3 points, 5 paragraphs). Let content determine the essay form.
--- Do NOT draw ideas from any online or print sources. No sources other than the texts and the course lectures are to be used for this assignment. Your own analysis only is required. (I want to hear YOUR ideas, not what someone else said online.)
Citations and List of Works Cited:
--- You must clearly reference all quotations and paraphrases from course materials and include a list of Works Cited. Please use MLA format in your in-text citations and Works Cited page; you should look over the MLA handouts in the handouts file and/or consult the OWL@Purdue website for MLA help.
--- Your essay must include a Works Cited page in MLA format.

Persepolis and Watchmen roles and visual representations of female characters
Marjane Satrapi is the narrator in Persepolis and recounts her experience from her native Iran to the West from the 1970s as a child. Alan Moore’s Watchmen normalizes sexual aggression towards women and even when the female characters are independent they play a secondary role to the men. Silk Spectre I play prominent roles in the Watchmen as a superheroine, but she also embraces her sexuality compared to the male characters. The graphic representation of women and men in the superhero comics is different depending on the author and the themes of the comic book. The female characters are heroines who require male characters to achieve more, and hypersexualization of female characters is represented by focus on their clothes they wear and their bodies and this is most apparent in the Silk Spectre I character who is in a tight fitting attire.
There are differences in the depiction of women where Satrapi is shown to be a strong character seeking to find her footing and Silk Spectre I is a heroine whose decisions is affected by male attention. Satrapi witnesses and provides counter-historical narratives about Iran and the West and she is control of what she knows as the main character who seeks freedom and justice based on the changing political and social context. Silk Spectre I is one of the defenders of law, order and morality who protects and defends the people, even as she is almost a victim of sexual violence. Silk Spectre supports the Minutemen to defend the people, and she is a heroine who requires collaborating with the male characters to bring change.
In Persepolis and Watchmen heroines and female characters play prominent roles where there is greater presence and plot development his role of supporting the male characters when compared to earlier comics. However, the roles and representation showed that they are most linked to what the society expect and what people are used where the comic heroines Marjane Satrapi and Silk Spectre I in Persepolis and Watchmen respectively face more challenges as they are female . The female characters show initiative and courage unlike the naive and weak companions of heroes, but there is explicit sexuality, especially in Watchmen, where sexualizing and other female characters. This shows that sexualization of the characters from their graphic design to the representation of gender roles was still common
The desires and wishes of the female characters are often ignored by the male character since males are the center of attention. Both Marjane and Silk Specter I seek to be independent, but they face obstacles because of the men around them and societal expectations about their roles in the society. There are conflicting messages on femininity represented by the female characters in the two stories as they are empowered, but still face difficulties being in the forefro...
