First AssignmentFor your first assignment, you will choose one piecc of art (can he video, painting, digital, sculpture, etc.) from the current Museum of Modem Art (MoMA) exhibit: "Collection from I970s-prcsent." Choose a piece of art that you respond to positively. Your essay will analyze both the piece of art and your own response to the piece. In other words, your paper should consider and fully explore the artwork and why you like this piece.
Take a photo of your selected piece to include with your paper submission. You may want
multiple angles for you to refer back to as you write.

Pantyhose and Sand, one of Senga Nengudi's works remain to be her most spectacular piece in history. The piece consists of pantyhose, which is partially knotted into sand-filled sacks. The pieces are then stretched and attached to the wall in different arrangements. The artist began her work with a group of the Avant-garde African American artists (Budd 27). Nengudi also obtained her inspiration from feminism, Japanese and African dance, and other religious rituals. Such inspiration has played a huge role in shaping her sculptures and installations. In making her pieces, she mostly uses synthetic and natural materials to make something touchable. This particular piece caught my attention due to its simplicity. Similar to other works of art, the piece is made of dark hues and amazing patterns that draw the viewers' attention. Without paying much attention to the materials used to make the work of art, then it could be difficult to interpret its meaning. I am always pleased with the work of art that has bright colors and a straight message. However, this peace seems to be unique since it uses locally available materials to make. It is amazing how an artist could think of making such beautiful works of art from materials such as nylon. It might seem simple, but making it might have been more challenging than we could imagine.
Pantyhose and Sand make me think about the strength of a woman. The artists had an inspiration from feminism during the time that she created the piece. It was a reflection of her pregnant body and the changes that the body was going through. She points out that once a woman becomes pregnant, then her body would stretch and never get back to the original size. The sand-filled sacks are a perfect representation of the body's elasticity. This explains the reason as to why she was working with nylon mesh. She points out that the human body begins by being tight and ends up sagging. The body can withstand the push and pull force to an extent where it is unable to withstand. It is at this point that it is unable to return to its original shape. Therefore, this could be an indication of a woman's psyche, which is able to withstand a lot of tribulations. As compared to the pantyhose, the female psyche can stretch and come back to shape. Hence, in a world where women are fighting to ensure gender equality, the piece is an indication of how fragile women are. No matter how difficult the fight against gender equality seems, women will always work their level best to ensure that their rights are observed. They might reach a breaking point but will raise again to their strength and keep on pushing for changes in society. As well, before the development of gender equality rights, women were considered as childbearing objects instead of career people (Frizzell 63). It was the role of the man to work hard and provide for the family. However, gender equality rights brought about plenty of changes, hence giving women more responsibilities of providing for their families. The pantyhose is an indication of the efforts that women are willing to endure to ensure that their families never lack a thing.
