Excellence usually attracts even more excellence. Success too, creates more opportunities to achieve even more. These opportunities come in the form of sponsorships, scholarships, and even the mentorship. Most of these, if not all, are what one can benefit from the NSCS. The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) is an organization or a program that recognizes the efforts of academically excellent students. These honors are usually accorded, in particular, to freshman and sophomore students. I believe that my involvement with NSCS has prepared me for the transition from Community College to a 4-year school, in a number of ways that I would note.
My involvement with NSCS has been beneficial on the bigger picture, as it has enabled me to remain focused on the final goal through continuous excellence. I believe that the processes involved and the programs put in place at this organization are aimed at ensuring that a learner maintains or even gets better, when it comes to academic excellence. The supporting structures also give one a chance to not only think within the context of an educational institution, but also to be able to project such aspects onto a wider perspective, such as careers (Hughes, 2011). The ability to create a more global way of thinking, even at such an early stage of one’s development, is a key aspect in ensuring that he or she, stays fixed on the ultimate goal.
Transition from community college to a 4-year institution is therefore a seamless one, since much of the things anticipated to be learnt in the greater institution have a foundation already. One of the toughest things in the life of a student, is to start off on some concept, without any prior knowledge. Therefore, taking from a simplistic point of view, involvement with the NSCS ensures that one acquires the basics needed for the longer ‘marathon.’
