Narrative Devices in "On the Rainy River,"
In the text, The Things They Carried, the narrator, Tim O’Brien employs various narrative techniques to portray the tone of the “On the Rainy River” section. The whole of the chapter portrays Tim as a character recruited to join the rest in the war. However, he is hesitant and wants to run away and take refuge in Canada. Ultimately, one man, Elroy, calmly helps him to face his fear and make his most revered decision-to join the war. Throughout the chapter, the narrator uses rhetorical questions, imagery and similes, and pathos. Therefore, having been convinces to join the army, Tim O’Brien utilizes numerous rhetorical tactics to detail how he prepared for war and to clarify that running away from what one dreads does not make the object of fear disappear.
O’Brien uses rhetorical questions to show the reader how difficult it was for him to decide to join the army. Such questions make the reader understand that the contemplation of the struggle of finally deciding whether to join the other men in war or not was easy. For instance, he asks, “What would you do? Would you jump? Would you feel pity for yourself? Would you think about your family and your childhood and your dreams and all you’re leaving behind” (54). it is equally important to note that he asks these questions in the second person, although they are personal. Another rhetorical question appears on page 38, “Was it a civil war? A war of national liberation or simple aggression? Who started it, and when, and why” (O’brien 38). these questions are almost targeting the reader as they compel one to think about how they would handle the situation if it happened to them.
