Narrative essays tell a story, with a point. If you do not have a point, you will get a "so what?" reader response. Read about narrative essays in your textbook pp. 238- 247. Carefully look over the example essays, especially "The Sanctuary of School."
The format of a narrative essay is usually straightforward, and may have shorter paragraphs, in higher amounts, than your typical academic essay. The intro needs to include a strong thesis that communicates the point the narrative is making. For example your story could be about the pig falling into the mud, but what is your point? If you state something like, "Because I saw the pig fall in the mud, I realized that we all have our struggles, and that I should be kind," that statement alludes to the story and states the overall point.
The body of the essay is broken into different paragraphs. Usually, when I share a story, I divide it into "before," "during," and "after." You may divide your story this way, or you can break the story down into events. It is up to you, but do not simply use one long paragraph for the body of the essay. Show that you can create a careful organization.
Finally, you will create a satisfying conclusion. Don't offer new information here, or just end with the last event. Reflect on the meaning of your point. Summarize your thesis, and state what you want the reader to realize from your sharing of this story. Notice that it is appropriate to use "I" because you are sharing your story.

Camping Experience
An experience that changed my view of life and nature happened when I went camping for the first time. I was 19 years old, and I wanted to a get away from the pressures of school and home. Together with five other friends, we organized a camping trip. It was a three-day camp, and it turned out to be an experience that changed my perception about life and nature. I did not grow up connected to nature, and the camping trip gave me an opportunity to embrace the beauty of nature. It taught me the value of nature and how it can offer refreshing experience.
When we arrived at the camp, my heart was racing all the time. I was excited about being free in the wild, away from the pressures that come with school and parents. Pitching the tent was a hard experience. Getting all the stakes and the poles straightened and hammered in the ground took a considerable amount of time. Some are shorter than others, and we had to keep switching them to fit in the length provided. After we completed setting it up, I felt we had accomplished something tangible. Personally, I was proud of myself because I enjoyed it. The experience of setting it up with friends is amazing. Everyone was equally committed, and it was an experience filled with laughter. Right from the onset of the camping, it was fun. I felt alive being with friends out there, away from the world.
The first night was filled with storytelling, and each one of us shared fun stories. The laughter that accompanied most of the stories was fulfilling. When I think about the camping trip, an image that first comes to mind is us sitting around the fire, telling stories, and having fun. Another thing that was present in that first night and the others that followed was the presence of bugs. In my stay at the campground, I saw moths, flies, spiders, wasps, and critters. The storytelling in the first night set up a beginning of an awesome camping experience.
