Narcissism
Narcissism refers to the self importance, selfishness that is in search of satisfaction from egotism admiration of one’s characteristics. In this regard people develop a personal disorder in which they think on how important they are than other individuals. The act of narcissism also shows how other may disregard other people or even look down upon them thinking that they are better than them.

From this context the author portrays two main characters, Olivia and Ravioli. The concept of narcissism is clear as the author brings out Ravioli as a being associated with good things that makes his ego to stand tall in comparison to Olivia. For example, Ravioli resides in an apartment in Madison and he leads a lavish life since he is exposed to all kind of food unlike Olivia. Moreover, at times it becomes difficult for them to meet because Ravioli turns to be very busy to attend to his friend. This is evident that narcissism is widespread in the society of America where a number of individual like Ravioli disregard others to be too low and not of their caliber since they feel that their ego cannot be compared to the less fortunate in the society. This has created disparities among the two, Olivia and Ravioli and therefore the relationship between them cannot be mutual.
In addition the author refers to Charles as a busy New York child with the schedule of a Cabinet Secretary. In this case, Charles is displayed to have no time for his companion Olivia. Their friendship does not grow into them since Charles feels to be more important than Olivia and therefore he tends to be the final decision maker in the friendship. Furthermore, the author writes that at many times Charles canceled their date lunch without even consulting Olivia. In this case, Charles feels to be more superior and he is troubled with the issues of self esteem that compels him to behave in such a weird manner towards his friend Olivia.
Busyness is what makes people to relate in the way that they should and even as they are expected to do.
