Moral and Ethical Development and Issues in Children’s Literature
Teaching develops an ethical character and character building among children. Moral education cannot be neglected as young children are the leaders of tomorrow and play an important role in spreading ethical norms in the society. Effective teaching goes beyond the limits of storing and processing the lectures given in the classrooms. Research shows that only literature for educational purposes is not sufficient while developing positive behaviors among children (Asselin and Doiron 24-26). Therefore, teachers need to adopt a wide variety of techniques for nurturing children while promoting ethical values in the society as a whole.
Children’s Literature
The book “The Capture of Father Time” by L. Frank Baum highlights the importance of time in one’s daily life. The text shows that it is the responsibility of every individual to make the best use of their time so that they are able to achieve their life objectives and career goals. Children can learn a great deal from this book about the best utilization of their time (Baum 1-8). Moreover, the author uses the imagination while focusing on time management and encourages children to make the best use of time for meeting career aspirations.
Different authors gave their critical reviews on the book “Little Red Riding-Hood”. One of the critics was given by Charles Perrault as the anthropologists and folklorists. The text shows that there is a strong connection present between Skoll and wolf. The sexual orientation of the book includes elements of abduction, rape, romantic and erotic connotations (Grimm 2-4). An American journalist, Susan Brownmiller depicts the story as rape, sex and emphasized on the women empowerment. Moreover, the story highlights that women are treated as weak creatures and the stronger elements present in society take advantage of them for their greed and lust.
The Harry Potter Effect on Children’s Literature
The Harry Potter series greatly impacts on the attitudes and behaviors of young children. With numerous amounts of Harry Potter books published in the last decade, the pop music culture and literary culture have combined into a single form. The rise in the popularity of these books has encouraged fans to utilize the internet frequently to browse for the latest books published in the Harry Potter series. Among different Harry Potter texts, science fiction has become an essential part of children’s books. The Harry Potter series has created a feeling of empathy and courteousness in the younger generation as the message portrayed in his texts shows kindness to all people in their difficult times (Simpson 1-10). Thus, analysis of the Harry Potter’s books has resulted in developing a positive attitude among children towards life.
