How does each author and work depict the tension between the individual and the community?
How does this relationship reflect the social, political, and historical contexts of the period of the great depression?
F. Scott Fitzgerald's "Bablylon Revisited" is a story of boom and bust and while there was high living during the 1920’s and Charlie Wales the hard drinking American expatriate in the story lived an extravagant life in Paris, but he later loses his money and was later careful in his spending. There was tension between the individual and the community since Wales and other people still wanted to live as though they were in the boom years even when their financial fortunes dwindled (Franklin et al 14). The people had lost hope dung the great depression, but many still sought to redeem themselves. There was lost hope at a time when the economic fortunes had dwindled, and the citizens accepted an expanded role of the government.
William Faulkner’s “Barn Burning” focuses on rural modernism where Abner Snopes an ex-soldier went about burning and destroying other people’s properties in Yoknapatawpha Mississippi. In the rural economy, there is exploitation of labor and economics governed social relations where the white tenant farmers also provided labor to richer gentleman farmers. Abner the societal values and used fire to revenge and his son Sarty faces a dilemma to support his father or societal values.
