Memoir Excerpts
The three memoirs have focused on key issues that revolve around the family support systems between the parents and their children. In A heart breaking work of staggering genius memoir is about the writer and his mother. In the memoir, the writer expresses concern for his ailing mother who has spent several days and nights on the coach with the television as her source of comfort. Her children are determined to take her to hospital to help her out and make things better for her. In The glass house, the writer is ashamed of living in Park Avenue and wearing pearls while her parents are struggling to feed themselves. The writer wants a better life for her parents even though her dad says he doesn’t need anything and her mum asks for unreasonable things such as membership in a health club. When I was Puerto Rican memoir is about the writer and her dreams even though her mum plays a supportive role. For months, Beth and mom have watched the show, every night.” This quote illustrates the support of the writer’s family towards their ailing mother. In When I was Puerto Rican, the writer is supported by her family to achieve her dreams. Her mother is willing to take her to Manhattan for the auditions even though she feels scared that it is far from home. “Mami bought me a red plain wool jumper with a crispy white shirt, my first pair of stockings and penny loafers. The night before, she had rolled up my hair in pink curlers that cut into my scalp and made it hard to sleep”. This quote illustrates the support a mother has for a child. She wants her daughter to look great during the auditions and so she goes an extra mile to
