Essay on Scoliosis
Introduction
Scoliosis is a neuro-muscular disorder that is often confused with other bone diseases. A three-dimensional change in the spinal cord is observed, and scoliosis is more common in children (aging from 9 to 15) than adults. For years, this disease has been a challenge for the world’s health experts. According to Theofanis Tsiligiannis and Tsiligiannis Grivas, a patient suffering from scoliosis complains about the spinal curve of 15 to 50 degrees. These curves are likely to be present at different points of the spinal cord and might tilt the pelvis or cause problem for the entire nervous system. The curves are usually in C and S shapes and might take a serious form if not diagnosed and treated timely (Tsiligiannis & Grivas 2012).
Signs and Symptoms
In the initial stage, the patients complain about back pain, neck and shoulder pain, buttock pain and feelings of restlessness. In some circumstances, an increase in the heartbeat is also noticed. Respiratory, cardiac and immunity problems are often associated with scoliosis. For example, the patient may complain about indigestion, painful menstruation and tightening of small and large intestines. When a doctor examines the patient, he observes whether his rib size has increased or not. He may also look at the ribcage based on one’s physical condition. Other prominent signs of the disease are uneven arms, legs, and hips. Slow nerve action means weak memory, and this is what your doctor might also look for. The chance is that he will ask you some general knowledge questions, which aim to determine the stage of scoliosis. Irregular heartbeat and lung and kidney pain may also occur when the disease reaches an alarming stage (Dudin & Pinchuk 2012).
Causes of Scoliosis
Patients who have scoliosis lose the flexibility of their spinal cord, resulting in irregular head movement. The scoliosis curves look flat when viewed from the front, but the spinal cord eventually loses its position and flexibility, causing problems for the entire body. It will appear twisted when seen from the backside. K. Bauknecht suggests that scoliosis is caused because of weak bones and muscle pain in children. In adults, the disease is caused due to cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy. Other possible causes of scoliosis are neuromuscular issues, genetic disorders, unhygienic environment, and spinal deformity (Bauknecht 2012).
Tools Used to Diagnose the Illness
It may not be possible for doctors to diagnose the disease with ordinary methods or techniques. M. Dudin and D. Pinchuk claim that collecting stool and blood samples in the initial stage is essential. The doctor may a...
