Virginia Woolf presents a fascinating plot in her short story ‘the mark on the wall'. The text is rich in styles and theme. It borders on feminism, modernism, a stream of consciousness and a blend of long and short sentences to convey the story. While reading through the story, the reader is presented with pleasure, confusion and unease. The piece is confusing from the moment the writer introduces the nail on the wall and is unable to describe it. As confusing as it is, the story is pleasurable from the definitions of the mark as given by Woolf herself. However, reading becomes uneasy due to the numerous metaphors employed by the author.
Throughout the story, the writer only imagines what the mark could be. For an instance, the author thought it is a nail, but dismisses that thought on the ground that the mark is too big and round (Woolf, par 5). She even thinks it's a flower left behind. The confusion about the mark elicits many conclusion from readers, one it can be concluded that it means the confusion and the elusive identity of various meaning in life (Greenblatt et al. 2).
