Loving the unlovable (CREATIVE WRITING)
The freedom of choice can be problematic if our choices are not in line with societal expectations. A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess addresses the conflict between an individual and the state using one main character to express his opinion about morality. He describes the punishment for a young criminal and his redemption. In A Clockwork Orange, the author highlights how the state is willing to protect the society by taking away individual freedom and transforming people to be better citizens. Even though Alex steals rape and commits murder, the author uses clever language to validate his character views. He presents how unlikable characters can be humanized changing the reader's allegiance towards someone once seems to be an evil character.
Initially, the reader views Alex as an unlikable character because of his merciless acts of violence. As the story progress, the author changes the tone of the story, reversing the hatred towards the character. Even though everyone would wish that he received the worst punishment at the beginning, these punishments start to change the readers feeling. In the end, the reader sympathizes with Alex because he is more of a victim than a criminal. Alex experiences results to his personal and moral transformation that gives a different impression.
How the author changes the readers' allegiance
The author presents Alex as a teenager with an unclear vision of his life, like most teenagers, Alex believes that he knows everything about the world, he and his gang believe that they have what it takes to create destruction in the society. Alex criminal acts show he is immoral; lack of morals is evident when Alex tries to justify his action. Alex responds by saying "But, sir, sirs, I see that it's wrong. It's wrong because it's against like society, it's wrong because every week on earth has the right to live and be happy without being beaten and to chocked and knifed".
Alex is presented as a character one would easily hate, he is brutal, and out of place with the societal norms. For example, his violent nature is evident in the first chapter, Alex and his friends beats up a blameless man who was simply drunk. The beating was not an act of revenge, but the fact that they did not like seeing the homeless drunk. Alex justifies his actions stating, "I could never stand to see a mode all filthy and rolling and burping and drunk, whatever his age might be, but more especially when he was real starry like this one was."
The authors' characterization can be divided into two different groups, those who believe in good and those who support bad behavior. Good and bad are intertwined and is a fundamental part of human nature.
