The Last King of France
Before the French revolution, France was a monarch. This is to mean that the country was under the rule of kings and queens. The last king to ever rule over France, was Louis XVI. The French revolution brought an end to the monarch’s rule over France as people demanded that there is democracy to the land. Louis XVI, lived between 1774 and 1793 (HISTORY.com). His death came in the form of execution, when he was found guilty of treason and was thus put to death, using the famous French guillotine. His death marked the end of the monarch rule and brought about the beginning of France as a republic (Offerman, Nick).
Youth
On the account of his early life, Louis XVI, was born in the year 1774 on 23rd of august. He was born in the palace of Versailles where he was given the title Duc de Berry, which simply indicated his junior status in the French court. Louis XVI, was the third son t Louis, who was the Dauphin of France. By extension he was thus the grandson of Louis XV of France. The mother to Louis XVI, Marie-Josephe of Saxony, was a Frederick Augustus II of Saxony’s daughter. Frederick Augustus II of Saxony, also happened to be the king of Poland (Chateau de Versailles). Growing up in the palace, Louis XVI was tutored by the French noblemen while he studied humanities, morality and religion. Records indicate that he was good at astronomy, geography, Latin and history. He also happened to enjoy locksmithing, wrestling and hunting (Offerman, Nick). Growing up, the parent did not pay much attention to him, given that he had an older brother who at the time was the predestined heir to the throne. However, all this changed when his older brother, Louis duc de Bourgogne died at the age of 9 in the year 1761. His father later on followed suit, in the year 1765, after battling tuberculosis, making Louis XVI the Dauphin at the age of just 11. Two years later, his mother also died from tuberculosis. Following his parents and brother’s death, Louis XVI, had to be prepared quick as he now had to ascend to power, without much training from his parents who ignored him most of the time. Given the short time in preparations led to lacking in character and leadership (Offerman, Nick).
Marriage
He married at the age of 15 in 1770, to 14-year-old Habsburg Archduchess Maria Antonia, who was a second cousin to him. Marie was the daughter to Holy Roman Emperor Francis I and Empress Maria Teresa of Austria. The match was intended to consolidate the alliance between the French and Austrians (Chateau de Versailles). From the start, their marriage was met with skepticism in the French court. This is relative to the fact that France had such an alliance before with Habsburgs and it brought seven years of war. Other than the fact that, the two were receiving skepticism from the public and the French court, internally, they also had challenges as was seen with the fact that they took eight years to get their first child after their wedding (Offerman, Nick). Louis XVI, did not trust his wife as much as he felt she could easily manipulate him. Even after getting three more children, only one survived their childhood.
