Introduction
Published in 1922, T. S. Eliot’s poem, The Waste Land, explores the life in London post WWI. On the other hand, Jackie Kay’s novel, “Trumpet”, which was published in 1998, chronicles the life and death of a fictional Jazz artist named Joss Moody mainly through a recollection of both family and friends who interacted with him at his death. In the “trumpet” the author has just introduced readers to a recently widowed Milly who has majorly been impacted by the loss of her husband, Joss Moody. Both the novel and the poem are based on loss and brokenness.
Loss and Absence
The Waste land offers numerous illusions of WWI which suggest that war played a major role in triggering psychological, social, and emotional collapse. The author begins the poem with a huge heap of broke images. Many characters in Eliot’s including Lil and the mother of five and whose unhappy marriage is being discussed in a pub – life unfulfilling lives all as a result of loss. Clearly, people’s lives are miserable and lacking a spiritual significance (Eliot). There is massive spiritual sickness which has also plagued the king and the entire land of the Holy grail.
