Introduction
There has been a heavy debate between the advantages and disadvantages of city living. On one hand, plenty of people argues that living in the city provides more opportunity for career growth and personal connection. On the other, people would argue that the countryside promises a more serene and easy-going life, far from the hassles of daily city living. While both of these have their own advantages and disadvantages, I believe that living in the countryside is much better today, especially when talking about financial freedom and opportunities for interaction. In this article, I would highlight the ongoing debate between those who believe that city living is much favorable, in contrasts to those who think that the country side is better. Particularly, the argument would hinge on the possibilities one’s financial freedom as well as the “uniqueness” of the interaction that happens between individuals.
Opportunities for Career Advancements
When it comes to the opportunities for career advancements, many kinds of literature states that living and working in the city allows one to be able to develop his/her ability to manage a company and/or an organization. In a study done by Counsell (1999), on the benefits for city dwellers in Ethiopia, he found that living in the city presents more opportunities regardless of one’s ethnic affiliations and political beliefs as compared to living in the country side. From this, it is, apparent that one of the main advantages of city living is that it somehow reduces the biases with regards to their hiring and promoting the process. On the other hand, proponents of the Country side living argues that career advancement are not necessarily tied to city living. Particularly, anecdotal accounts show that plenty of corporations also promotes managers from their countryside branches, especially when they prove to be more competent than managers from the metropolitan area (Zweig, 1991). Another argument proposed by those living in the countryside is that these days, most of the high paying jobs could be found on the internet.
