Where does this source come from?
Response to the story “Mo’ikeha”, Hawaiian voyaging, comes from Fornander, Collection of Hawaiian antiquities and Folk-lore volume IV. It was a collection of tales about the Mo’iheka chieftaincy that existed in Honolulu: Bishop museum and was updated between 1916 t0 1917.
The story’s main point
The story’s main point was to highlight the traditional culture of the ancient Haiti people such as the inheritance of power. This has been portrayed along Mo’ikeha’s lineage, which produced the key leaders of the community such as Mo’ikeha himself and his two sons Kila and La’amaikahiki, who both inherited the leadership reigns from their father in Kauai and Tahiti respectively. Besides the inheritance culture, the story also explains how various names of landmarks within the shores of Tahiti were conceived as well as how a number of traditional cultural activities that is today common among the members of Tahiti and Hawaii (Voyaging Tradition, p.1).
The Purpose of the story
The major objective of this story was to unearth the traditional and cultural activities that exist among members of the Tahiti community. In addition to this, the other factor that can be presumed to the major objective of the story is that the story focuses on helping the people who live in today’s world in connecting the dots in the relationship about Mo’ikeha’s family both in Hawaii and in Tahiti. Finally, the other purpose of the story was to help events that led to naming of various landmarks in Tahiti such as the ocean to the west of Koha’olawe got the name “Kealaikahihi” meaning the road to Tahiti after La’amaikahiki used it to travel back to Tahiti.
Was it Successful? Why or why not?
Subsequently, from the events discussed in the story, it is convincible to argue that it did succeed in achieving its major objectives, which are clarifying more about the lineage of Mo’ikeha’s family and providing the knowledge about various cultures and traditions of Haitians and how these cultural activities were conceived. For instance, from the story we are able to understand the reasons that led to Mo’ikea’s journey to Kauai from Haiti Hawaiian (Voyaging Tradition, p.1). In addition, the story did succeed in showing us how various Haitian traditions came to exist. For instance, from the story, one is able to find out that hula dance, La’amaikahiki, the son of Mo’ikeha, introduced a common traditional dance among Haitians.
