My once in a lifetime event
I vividly recall the morning of September 11th in 2001 as if it was yesterday; the morning was no different from other days. The day was beautiful as the sun was bright, the sky as blue as a deep ocean. Being a Tuesday morning, we had just finished our morning routine physical education and I was drenched with sweat. I went to the washrooms to for a while, when I arrived in class, everyone was rushing to see what was happening outside. Everyone's eyes were glued to the television screen in the school hallway with tears rolling down their faces. I pushed my way through near the screen, what I saw left me with a rush of sadness that hit me like a tone of bricks ,I knew something bad had happened.
No one could explain, the person next to me simply pointed at the television, it took time for me to understand what was going on. I saw the rescue team rushing up and down the television screens and all I could hear were hijackers, terrorist, twin towers and the death toll. Later I found out that one of our classmate's father was among those trapped in the collapsed building. She was scared because she had not heard any news. I saw repeated clips on how the twin tower building collapsed after two airplanes hijacked by terrorist hit the building crumbling down like blocks. Seconds later the second tower collapsed shortly as dust and debris engulfed the street of New York that day like a huge tidal wave.
Everyone was screaming for help and an aerial view of the city showed horrific scenes of impenetrable dust. After one hour, parents flocked the school compound demanding to take their children. I remember my mother telling me that something terrible had happened and she would explain to me when we get home. I got home and I was still curious to know what was really happening. I saw horrific clips of people jumping out of windows in desperation.
I later learned that two American airplanes had been hijacked by terrorists with one plane meant to destroy the Pentagon, the headquarter of the department of defense, while the other was meant to destroy Washington D.C. However, passengers in the plane resisted resulting in the plans crashing...
