Analysis of King of the Bingo Game Plot
King of the Bingo Game is a short story by Ralph Ellison that was initially published in November 1914. It tells the story of the specific alienation that African Americans felt in the United States. The bingo King, who is the story’s main protagonist, is alone in the world. He is likely to be further alienated if his wife Laura, who is gravely sick, dies. This essay looks at how the plot construction of the story fulfils the reader’s expectations. It will also explore how Ellison uses events, characters and motivations to reach the appropriate climax.
The story opens with a black man in movie theatre watching a film he has already watched before. The reader gets to learn that the man is poor and that his wife is seriously ill on her deathbed. Once the movie comes to an end, a bingo game starts. The man is carrying five cards, something that enables him win the Bingo game and get a chance to spin the wheel for the jackpot. When the man continues pushing the button that controls the wheel and does not give up, the remote control is wrestled from him by two white policemen and he is knocked unconscious.
