Is College the Best Option?
College graduates earn more than their counterparts who have not gone to college. In their study, Owen and Sawhill agree that the return on education increases with every year spent schooling (319). So, this means that for a four-year degree program, one will have increased their monthly earnings further. These reports are supported by the Bureau Labor of Statistics, which indicates that individuals with a Bachelor’s degree earn $468 more every week than individuals with High School diplomas. While there are other factors that go into determining one’s salary including the school one attended as well as the career choice, the main issue here is that for a degree holder, the future looks bright. Simple calculations reveal that in a month, the difference in earnings is $1872, and in a year, it is $22,464. It is not healthy to consider education as an investment, but the information presented above shows that if it were, it would be wise to invest in it early.
People who have gone to college are also likely to find jobs. Every country suffers from unemployment with college and high school graduates both having to spend months and years trying to secure themselves a job. However, for individuals who have a Bachelor’s degree, this problem does not take as much time as it does for High School graduates. Owen and Sawhill do agree with this statement but issue a disclaimer noting that it is only individuals who have majored in education and health (327). However, if one considers a person with an engineering degree versus another with a High School diploma, the chances of the former getting employed are higher than the latter. Data from the Bureau of Statistics indicate that for a person with a Bachelor’s degree, the rate of unemployment is lower. The image shown below is a testament to the above statement. While the fee structure can be surprisingly high, in the future, one is guaranteed a lifetime that is far less stressful as far as securing oneself, a job is concerned.
People who have Bachelor’s degrees also happen to be more satisfied with what they are doing compare to individuals without. A college education is not necessarily the gateway to a smooth life. However, having a college education makes it possible for one to derive more satisfaction from their career. Owen and Sawhill agree with the statement above.
