Intersectionality
Intersectionality refers to the concept of interconnecting the oppressive or discriminative factors among minority groups. In other words, intersectionality seeks to illustrate that discriminative factors such as racism, sexism, and homophobia, act collectively and gradually shape one another. From this perspective, we can argue that a combination of two or more minority statuses is disadvantageous to an individual than having a single minority status. Also, a person with pure majority statuses is more privileged in society than those without any majority status or those with both minority and majority status. The concept of intersectionality claims that the majority (race, age, gender, ability, sexuality) often use their statuses against the minority groups. Therefore, the wellbeing of a person is dependent on the range of minority or majority groups they belong to in a particular society. The “discriminative effect” is normally encouraged by negative social perceptions and habits, including prejudice, stereotypes, sexism, and racism.
To illustrate intersectionality, let’s consider three students in three students from a high school in Chicago. Jennifer (African-American female), Tom (White male), and Emmy (White female) are teenagers in a racially diverse class. Jenifer’s parents moved into the country when she was three years old. It took them several years to secure a reliable job since they have not been able to obtain appropriate citizenship. Currently, her father is a janitor in one of the popular night restaurants in the neighborhood. The mother has no permanent employment. Tom’s family is relatively well-off and above the middle class.
