Introduction
The internet has a massive contribution to the modern way of life. It provides a platform on which people can easily communicate and share information, making human life more enjoyable and satisfying. This special feature has resulted in the internet being adopted by schools, business entities, and even governments. The most notable advantages of the internet include easy access to information and bringing human beings around the world together. Despite its advantages, the internet has its own demerits. It is associated with pornography contents, cyber-bullying and health issues. Through discussion of the merits and demerits of the internet, this paper seeks to determine whether the internet is good or not good.
Merits of the internet
Firstly, information accessibility is probably the most valuable thing the internet offers to human beings. According to Tufekci (2014), the internet provides all information related to all aspects of man and nature under the sun. This information ranges from trade practices, marketing strategies, government laws, nature, and space exploration. More so, the internet provides search engines such as Yahoo and Google, which help us in accessing information. Furthermore, the information on the internet continuously undergoes changes, enabling people to access up-to-date information. Since this information is readily available, the internet benefits students by increasing their knowledge banks. Information is power, and the internet is a rich source of that.
Secondly, the internet enhances communication and connects people around the world. Through social media sites such as Facebook, Whatsapp and Snapchat, the internet converts the world into a small village. It definitely plays a great role in globalization. The convenience offered by the internet enables companies to easily communicate through e-mail. This has resulted in expansion of businesses due to efficient communication between companies, customers and vendors. More so, through school websites on the internet, students easily communicate with their tutors enhancing learning. These exemplary internet features have resulted in online learning which allows learning beyond borders. Through constant communication through the internet, some people have been able to find their soul mates through dating sites.
Thirdly, the internet provides fast and satisfactory entertainment. The internet has been very successful in promoting the entertainment sector. Game lovers can easily download games for free from gaming companies’ websites. More so, people do not need to go to cinema halls to watch movies. They can easily purchase these movies from companies that offer online services through a reliable internet connection. Additionally, people can watch the news or entertainment programs live on the internet as events unfold minute by minute. Compared to the traditional industry where things were recorded before reaching the audience, the internet ensures people have entertainment services at their fingertips.
