* My opinion on the importance of the Constitutional Convention
The constitutional convention changed the political landscape of the young United States. The Confederation of Perpetual Union Constitution was not likely to steer the country into a great nation we know today. The constitutional convention tailored democracy for the young nation and it has steered the country for over 200 years. The debaters of the constitutional clauses created a vision of a great nation strongly anchored in democracy and the power balance between the arms of the government. It featured procedures to ratify the constitution clauses to ensure it was modular and adaptive of the changing world.
To fully understand the importance of this convention, test the constitution of the confederation against American history, especially the civil war and the civil rights movement. These events would have broken the United States, and hence the ratifications which birthed the new constitution birthed a stronger foundation for the young nation. Before the convention, many individual states had fallen behind in honoring the debts they owed to Britain. The existence of the unity of the states anchored in the constitution of the confederation was not resilient to steer the country economically and politically.
The United States in its current existential form would not be possible. The international hegemony she has in the world would be possible. The union may have been broken, and hence it would not be North America, we know today, but a continent ravaged by conflicting nations and poor economy because of these conflicts. Most of the other continents which have several states are always in constant conflicts and wars which have stifled their economic development. The convention formed the basis for the abolishment of slavery, which would have continued longer if the constitutional convention was not held. The convention led to the first federal congress, which went to pass the infamous bill of rights. If it were not for the convention, it was likely that the bill of rights might have taken longer and ratified differently by each state.
