Birds of America is a Collection of twelve stores that were written by Lorrie Moore. Though the actors in these stories are depicted in different settings such as Maryland, Iowa, Italy, Louisiana and Ireland, all are portrayed as being hopeless, aimlessness, boredom and anxiety. These characters cannot link together nor communicate with one another, they neither feel love, nor have they inner resources. The stories at the beginning of the book are concerned with ladies who are isolated from their own nature and thriving in a quotidian. Relating the stories in “Four calling birds, three French Hens”, a character by the name Aileen refuses to stop grieving over the death of her dog despite the consolation from her daughter and husband. The two main protagonist in this book , one a house painter living with a blind person in “What You Want to Do Fine," and a law professor in "Beautiful Grade" appear as being lonely and disaffected figures in domestic circumstances. The stories in this collection transcends to awry settings, especially in the story where the tumor grows in a child’s body. In each of these stories, the author empowers most of her characters with what could be referred as witness, enabling their conversations and thoughts to flicker with wit, idioms, and wordplay that are employed in surprising originality. Though the characters lives appear as being in orderly, their thoughts work at an alarming speed and their inner emotions are expressed through witness.
On the other hand, “This is how you lose her” is also a collection of stories written by Juniz, Diaz. Contrary to Moore’s collection, the stories in this book majorly focuses on wonder and regret at the assurance and difficulties which life presents to young men and women as they undergo cultural transformations that interfere upon their lives. On a certain beach in Dominica, there appears an ill- fated affair that flounders. In the center of the hospital laundry room in New Jersey, there is a lady who is doing her washing while at the same time thinking about her husband. There is also another individual in Boston, buying his son, born out of wedlock a baseball and glove. At the epicenter of these stories is Yunior, the central character of these collections, a young hard heard who is irresistible and cannot be repressed. His recklessness however, makes her to be consistently losing his many women lovers such as, Miss Lora, Alma, and Magdalena, who perceives that “all men in Dominica are liars” (25). This makes him to abandon these interests and pursues others which he deems as being meaningful.
The impeccable ability of both Moore and Junoz, to understand the conduct of humans and also catching the moment which flips of an individual from being unusual to unmoored...
