While freedom of exchange of ideas is essential on college campuses across the US, avoiding violence in the process is a problem. It is the opinion of many students that hate speech should not be protected. They say that they can differentiate between free speech and hate speech and it is the belief of many that the latter should be restricted in universities. A majority of students believe it is okay to disrupt very controversial speakers while some campuses have gone ahead to create “free speech zones” in order to maintain peace. On the other side lie absolutists such as the American Civil Rights Union who believe that freedom of speech is the foundation of democracy.
