At a time where the tournament was open to students from different parts of the states, the schools competed in the same division. In the sports film, coach Dale revamps the Hickory High basketball and gains the support of the high school ball players and community members, while there are fictional elements that are relevant in understanding the coach’s leadership style. Jimmy Chitwood plays a troubled and sullen boy who almost quit the team because he felt that it was only his jump shot that kept him in the team and other people only loved him for this. Jimmy is one who was likely to hold out and refuse to play for the team. The town did not welcome coach Norman with open arms as he was an outsider, but since Jimmy resolved to go wherever the new coach went the town agreed that the coach ought to have been given a chance. Jimmy saw Coach Dale as a father figure as his father had died, while he had to stay with his Myra Fleenor the English teacher and assistant principal who persuaded him to drop basketball in favor of his studies. Coach Dale is the protagonist in the film, but it takes community’s efforts, the individual players and the coach to make a difference. The community members were proud of their place that they even sought to influence the coaching choice, but even outsiders had a hand in the team’s success. Coach Dale gained the community’s confidence and the players, allowing the team to gel and utilize their capabilities to weak the state championship and those who show individuality are shut out of the team until they learned the importance of teamwork. The movie changed details like the school winning the 1952 Indiana state title in while it was actually in 1954, and unlike baseball movies that tended to focus on what was wrong with the fame, the movie followed the lives of the high school baseball players and their coach. While the team was undermanned, the actual Milan school had made great strides in basketball in the previous year’s tournament. In most dramas, there are conflicts and rivalries that make the movies interesting. However, Hoosier has a different approach as conflict is suppressed in favor of people taking second chances where the basketball players learn to work together.
