Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Literature & Language Essay (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

topic In the book heart of darkness What topic does Conrad intentionally obfuscate and/or illuminate through the chiaroscuro literary technique, and how does this method impact your knowledge of the topic? How much of the topic do you ever get to know? (writing about Chiaroscuro )
My own thesis :In Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, Conrad presents light which represents life and goodness in a sophisticated way. The physical appearance of light does not necessarily refer to the quality of light instead it reveals the quality of darkness which is death and evil.
Requirement: needs 5 textual support. and give credit to Perlis for mentioning Chiaroscuro topic in the heart of darkness in the article attached
fount the textual support if that would help
“The sun set; the dusk fell on the stream, and lights began to appear along the shore. The Chapman lighthouse, a three-legged thing erect on a mud-flat, shone strongly. Lights of ships moved in the fairway—a great stir of lights going up and going down. And further west on the upper reaches the place of the monstrous town was still marked ominously on the sky, a brooding gloom in sunshine, a lurid glare under the stars.” (Conrad 5)
“‘Light came out of this river since -- you say, Knights? Yes; but it’s like a running blaze on a plain, like a flash of lightning in the clouds. We live in the flicker -- may it last as long as the old earth keeps rolling! But darkness was here yesterday.’” (Conrad 6)
“A rocky cliff appeared, mounds of turned-up earth by the shore, houses on a hill, others, with iron roofs, amongst a waste of excavations, or hanging in the declivity…. A lot of people, mostly black and naked, moved about like ants…. A blinding sunlight drowned all this at times in a sudden recrudescence of glare.”(Conrad 16)
“It was very simple, and at the end of that moving appeal to every altruistic sentiment it blazed at you, luminous and terrifying, like a flash of lightning in a serene sky.”(Conrad 57)
“Thus I was left at last with a slim packet of letters and the girl’s portrait. She struck me as beautiful—I mean she had a beautiful expression. I know that the sunlight can be made to lie, too” (Conrad 84)

Introduction
In the novel the Heart of Darkness, the author Conrad intentionally illuminates and obfuscate the light and darkness to present broad understanding in the relation of two separate entities. Based on personal reasoning the sun does not show the physical light but symbolizes the dark which is the death and evil. The literature technique used by Conrad in the presentation of the art is called Chiaroscuro technique. The method complicates the literature work and makes it difficult for the readers to comprehend. However, the process creates a visualization of two different concepts developed in a piece of literary art. This article examines how the style impacts the knowledge of the reader about the topic and the much in the text that one ever gets to understand. The paper outlines textual supports based on the journal by Perlis for mentioning the Chiaroscuro topic.
