The artwork portrays the Macedonian King Antigonous Doson Poseidon, the God of the Sea, who was discovered recently after the discovery of the Greek silver coin. The artist of the sculpture has not been known but after the discovery of the ancient Greek coin, many researchers argue that the sculpture must have belonged to the period 227-221 BC (Jenks, 12). Basing on the credit line, this is a museum purchase funded by Isabella and Wallace. According to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston the image is currently located at the Audrey Jones Beck Building 105 Enron orientation gallery. The sculpture was very significant to the ancient Greeks as it signified the supremacy of the Macedonians over sea.
Description
The subject, as seen clearly, is of a man at an advanced old age. The judgment is based on the sunken cheeks of the image and also under the eyes, there are pronounced circles. In addition, the subject has deep furrows on his forehead. His eyes are slightly gazing down which could be something held in his hands. The image is hanging fragment. The subject has a fine facial bone structure with the eyes deep on the face and the curls of the hair and the beards suggest the wavy nature of the sea.
