Offred is the narrator and protagonist in Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, and she is sent to work for the Commander in the Republic of Gilead. Offred is coerced into sexual relations by the Commander who seeks to control her body and she has few alternatives under the totalitarian rule. The handmaid is not allowed to access books, and this is meant to make her more docile, and if there are no memories about the past, it is more difficult for other housemaids to be liberated. The feminist approach looks at the place and role of women in a society and how they are treated in private and public life in ways that are disempowering like those banished for their mistakes.
