Question One
In total, there are four triangular relationships. There is a relationship between Hamlet, Claudia, and Gertrude. There is also a relationship between Hamlet, Ophelia, Polonius. A relationship also exists between Hamlet, Claudius, and Polonius.
Question Two
The ghost says that he is Hamlet’s father and sure bears semblance. The ghost claims that it was his brother, Claudia that murdered him. Claudia has now gotten married to Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude. The ghost says that he will never rest in peace until the person who killed him is brought to justice. In the protestant religion that Hamlet belongs to, ghosts are not supposed to be purgatory in nature. The ghost has a lot in common with Hamlet. At one point, Ophelia tells Hamlet that he was pale like a ghost. It could be that the ghost story is all in the imagination of Hamlet. Although the likes Horatio see the ghost, only Hamlet has a conversation with it. Hamlet is the only one who sees and hears the ghost when he appeared to him in his mother’s. It could be that the ghost is real but it looks as if Hamlet has been imagining it because he is wants to revenge (Greenblatt n.p).
Question Three
Ophelia is a young and attractive woman who is divided between being loyal to her father and living up to the promise of loving Hamlet; and yet Hamlet and her father do not really like each other. Her father is against her love with Hamlet. Her brother too thinks that all Hamlet wants to do is to use her. That Hamlet only wants to take her virginity and throw her away like some piece of trash. Her father and brother view her like an example of excellence, a brilliant and dutiful lady who should make a great mother. And yet Hamlet uses her as a sex object and views her as corrupt and deceitful. Ophelia has no one to give her guidance. She cannot tell what is true from what is not and has no way of overcoming the contradictions (Greenblatt and Walter n.p). She believes her father and never wants to question him, but she also never wants to let go of her love for Hamlet. But she cannot achieve both. There is no way she can be obedient to her father and remain true to her love. It is this dilemma that sends her to madness. She never wants to let go of either but she can never achieve both.
