Visual rhetoric essay on nature's garbage in the ocean- Great Pacific Garbage Patch
Introduction
In the photo “Come Visit the Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch”, the problem of accumulating plastic trash floating in the Pacific Ocean is highlighted. The plastic remnants accumulate over time, but efforts to address the pollution problem have been ineffective (Hammer, Kraak and Parsons 11). The debris in the Pacific Ocean is most likely Americas and the highly populated areas of the Asia Pacific region. The visual welcomes people to see the ‘beautiful trash’, but in reality this is a toxic garbage that cannot be easily cleaned up. The accumulation of non-biodegradable trash, debris is a threat to the marine environment and it increases ocean pollution.
Purpose of visual and audience
The visual seeks to raise awareness of the problem of plastic junk found in the ocean and how this has affected the maritime protection. This targets ordinary people unaware about the problem, manufacturers of plastic materials, governments and environments seeking to reduce tons of trash that washes up in the oceans. The garbage dump is ugly and dangerous, and since it is found floating in the waters away from places of residence, people may not be aware about the extent of the pollution (Howell et al 19). Just like the boat cannot pass through the waters, so do the animals that live in marine environments. The non biodegradable garbage accumulates over time, and more trash is to be found in waters and it is more difficult to manage such waste compared to that on land (Hammer, Kraak and Parsons 11). There is a direct link between waste management and the quantity of plastic debris found floating in the waters, and the contrasting colors of waste and water highlights this.
The choice of color in the photo provides context as the water is blue, while the boat is white, and the trash is mostly an array of dark colors. Without the trash the water would be pure and free from pollution, and would be beautiful rather than ugly. The caption states ‘beautiful trash’ but in reality the trash is an eyesore to the surroundings. Since the trash can be found in seven million square miles, it is clear that maritime pollution is a big problem that ought to concern people. The trash is composed of products that are commonly used by people in different locations, and just as ocean environments are polluted the level of contamination can be reduced significantly by humans that the water can be highlighted in blue color with no trash around.
In framing the photo, the visuals achieves balance because of the arrangement of the trash, boat and water make it clear that the vessel cannot move beyond its positioning because of the trash surrounding it and ahead. Hammer, Kraak and Parsons (11) highlighted that the trash in marine environments is slow to biodegrade compared to those on land because there is no heat build-up and thermal oxidation to speed up breakdown. In the photo, there is a repetition with emphasis on the trash, highlighting that the impact of garbage in the Pacific Ocean and this directs attention to the problem. It is though the upper half composed of plastic trash, and onl...
