Various approaches to human conflicts can be seen in the context of society. Human reality is largely subjective of the experiences, cultural values, and norms. These constructs generally establish the constraints on gender and sexuality. However, some scientists also argue that the differences in gender perception can be explained by biology, specifically, neurology.
Theories are designed to enlighten people about natural phenomena that cannot be explicitly explained through science. Several approaches have been born out of these concepts. Some of these include social construct and gender conflict theories. The social construct theory explains that personal decisions govern the social life of a person (Mallon, 2019). However, gender construction is based on the biological structure of the genitalia of a child from birth (Hunt, 2020, slide 8). One example is Blum’s (1998) excerpt on how she chose the Christmas gifts that she loved, where, despite wanting to use a “boyish” toy, she opted to use a Barbie doll. Blum is a female based on biology. Thus, society dictates her to choose dolls over boyish toys. Blum only realized that she could have chosen otherwise when she became a parent. Because of this, Blum was not able to explore the other faces of gender (Blum, 1998).
