“Frankenstein: Life and Legacy”
Essay One (1000 words)
This is a close reading exercise, with revision. Choose ONE of the following passages from
Frankenstein and carefully analyze its significance within the context of the larger themes of the novel. You should aim to explore and reflect on how the text creates meaning through both its form and content. The grade for the assignment will be based on your performance through the drafting and revision process as well as on the quality—including argumentation, evidence, structure, clarity, and accuracy.
PASSAGES:
1) “Like Adam, I was created apparently united by no link to any other being in existence; but his state was far different from mine in every other respect. He had come forth from the hands of God a perfect creature, happy and prosperous, guarded by the especial care of
his Creator; he was allowed to converse with, and acquire knowledge from beings of a
superior nature: but I was wretched, helpless, and alone…. Why did you form a monster so
hideous that even you turned from me in disgust? God in pity made man beautiful and
alluring, after his own image; but my form is a filthy type of yours, more horrid from its very resemblance. Satan had his companions, fellow-devils, to admire and encourage him; but I am solitary and detested.” (105)
2) "Although I possessed the capacity of bestowing animation, yet to prepare a frame for the reception of it, with all its intricacies of fibres, muscles, and veins, still remained a work of inconceivable difficulty and labour. I doubted at first whether I should attempt the creation of a being like myself or one of simpler organization; but my imagination was too much exalted by my first success to permit me to doubt of my ability to give life to an animal as complex and wonderful as man.” (35)
3) “Why am I here to relate the destruction of the best hope, and the purest creature of earth. She [Elizabeth] was there, lifeless and inanimate, thrown across the bed, her head
hanging down, and her pale and distorted features covered by her hair. Everywhere I turn I
see the same figure” (156)
4) “I felt as if I was about the commission of a dreadful crime, and avoided with shuddering
anxiety any encounter with my fellow-creatures. At one time the moon, which had before been clear, was suddenly overspread by a thick cloud, and I took advantage of the moment of darkness, and cast my basket into the sea; I listened to the gurgling sound as it sunk, and sailed away from the spot.” (143)
Essay One is a formal writing assignment. It should have a thesis and make direct reference to textual evidence in the form of properly cited quotations and paraphrases. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
The monster is alone and feels like an outcast, and Mary Shelley highlights this by mentioning God’s creation of Adam as the first human being. The monster’s creation is likened to this, but unlike the humans it has no one to talk to meaning that that it is isolated. other than this the human beings are pleasing to look at, while the monster is deformed and cannot simply show up anywhere it likes compared to the human beings. The passage is central to the novel mentioning Satan and Adam to emphasize the idea of creation. This essay highlights isolation suffered by the creature from being rejected by its creator and other humans.
Communication is a recurring theme throughout the novel the monster seems to feel that it has no use on earth if it cannot communicate with similar beings. In another case,
Captain Watson longs for a male friend who he can talk to and not simply the fellow sailors, but someone who is a companion and a confidant. The monster likens Victor Frankenstein to God, with their creations being the monster and Adam respectively (Shelley 105). However, this is where the similarities end, since the monster cannot be protected like Adam was, while God did converse with Adam. The person or Supreme Being with power also dictates the communication. Surprisingly the monster also wanted to force Victor to listen.
The Biblical analogy in the creation of the creature highlights the gender divide between the males and females. The ordered system in both cases captures males as the first beings to be created, but they are lonely and need female companions. It is likely that the author sought to contrast the alienation of men because of the value placed on them compared to women in their creations. The creature mentions that Satan has companions, while the monster is detested and rejected by human beings (Shelley 105). The creators have the power over their creations, but then the male have dominion when control other beings. The creature is powerless since it cannot control any other being and further becomes alienated from having no relations with like-minded beings.
Shelley (105) allows the monster/ creature to voice concerns about the interaction between the monster and man. This strategy highlights the monster’s suffering under the hands of human beings and alienation because of inability to communicate and have meaningful relationships. The invasion of technology can increase alienation, and the creature is lonely after having being created through technology but finding no other creature to relate with. The human beings do not associate themselves with the monster and this is the main reason for its alienation and the monster looks hideous. It as though the monster’s creator already rejected it and hence the creature’s appre...
