Final Paper Proposal. Modern Chinese Literary Thought: Writings on Literature

The proposal should be at least two paragraphs or longer and give an outline for the final paper.
Topic:
How do you interpret the representation of modern women/students in works we have seen or read this past semester, such as “Xiao Xiao,” Lust Caution, Eileen Chang’s essays, Xiao Hong’s stories, and Raise the Red Lantern? What cultural meanings are attached to modern women, and how do they differ from traditional Chinese female characters?
Structure for paper proposal:
I. Please indicate which topic (from the list below) you have decided to write about and why you find this topic interesting, relevant, and/or important.
II. Then summarize what your thesis or argument will be. The thesis should:
1. Narrow the topic to a single idea that you want your readers to gain from your essay.
2. Assert something about the topic, conveying your purpose, your opinion, and your argument. What is your position and viewpoint?
3. Serve as a road map for the paper; in other words, it tells the reader what to expect from the paper.
4. Make a claim others might dispute.
5. Is usually a single sentence somewhere in your first paragraph that presents your argument to the reader. The rest of the paper, the body of the essay, gathers and organizes evidence that will persuade the reader of the logic of your interpretation.
III. Next, explain how you plan to organize your paper. What readings and films will you analyze in the paper? (Please remember you will need to include analysis of at least four passages from the readings-preferably more-with page numbers. This requirement pertaining to the reading will be a significant portion of the grade, though you are not required to include the passages in your proposal.) Give a rough outline of the body of the paper and discuss the arguments you will make and examples you will give to illustrate your thesis.
