1. Be able to explain what a paraphrase is in your own words. In case you have forgotten, a paraphrase is a restatement of your source. You use your own words and maintain the context of the original source. A paraphrase is best used for a few words up to an entire paragraph. A paraphrase is the same length or longer than the original passage. As you are using someone else’s ideas you must cite the paraphrase.
2. What is plagiarism? How can you avoid plagiarism when writing an essay?
3. Know how to create/format a works cited page for an essay.
4. What are the steps or stages of the writing process? What happens in each of these steps?
5. How do you write a cause and effect essay?
6. What are primary causes? Remote causes? Immediate effects?
7. What is a causal chain?
8. A summary is a condensed version of your source.
It is not more than 1/5 the length of the original passage. A summary is written in your own words and gives the main ideas of a source. In-text documentation is needed as you are using the ideas found in a source. Know how to write a summary.
9. Know how to write an analysis. What are the steps for writing an analysis? How do you find evidence to support your ideas in an analysis?
10. What is synthesis? How is synthesis used when writing a researched essay?
