The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Huckleberry, Huck for short, loved fun as much as he loved freedom. His honesty can be seen throughout the book; however, if needed he would resort to deception. His relationship with Jim progressed morally enabling Jim’s dream of being free to become real. As a run-away slave, Jim changed Huck’s societal perception of slavery -- treating slaves like worthless animals as they are part-animal.
One night, Huck pranked Jim placing the skin of a snake at the edge of Jim’s bed not. Unknowingly, the snake’s mate crawled its way to Jim’s bed biting his foot. The swell lasted less than a week rising guilt out of Huck. The latter had come to acknowledge Jim’s humanity rather than the misconception of slaves being part-animal. Since he perceived humans as free beings, he thought of Jim deserving freedom just as others do. At the same time, Huck felt like he’d be rebelling against human cycle towards freedom if he would not let Jim attain his won freedom; hence, he will be condemned to hell. Huck realized the issues between what humans think is moral and what is spiritually moral. Moreover, Huck’s change in moral perceptions made him acknowledge Jim’s wisdom accumulated from his survival experience in the wild -- differentiating luck between good and bad. As a result, he would listen well to whatever Jim would say. For instance, in order to cure Jim’s bite, he did as what Jim told him to do following the snake incident -- he threw the head of the snake after chopping it off and roasted its body after skinning it. Jim had also said of bad luck whenever on handles the skin of a snake. Huck believed that if he would follow bad luck instead of good luck, hell would gladly wait for his soul. In this case, Huck did not want to go to hell; hence, he allowed Jim’s freedom as human.
This sort of portrayed morality in a conflicting way inside Huck’s mind. Analyzing situations and considering morality had been Jim’s contribution to Huck’s progress, whereas Huck’s allowing of Jim’s freedom contributed to Jim’s access to attaining his dreams.
