The paper has one-inch margins all around. Each page has a header of last name and page number. The paper will be double-spaced throughout, no extra space between sections or paragraphs. The entire paper, including the heading and title, needs to be in the same type and size of font. This template uses Times New Roman 12pt font. Because it is easy to read, this font is definitely appropriate for college essays. Make sure that the essay is left aligned, not fully justified. One space between sentences is standard; however, double-spacing between sentences is okay. Follow your instructor’s preference in spacing and be consistent. Hit the enter key only once at the end of each paragraph.
In the MLA format, you document your research in parenthetical citations. This allows you to “acknowledge your sources by keying brief parenthetical citations in your text to an alphabetical list of works that appears at the end of the paper” (Gibaldi 142). Notice that in this brief citation the period goes after the parenthesis. The information in parenthesis should be as brief as possible. You will use the author’s last name or a shortened title for unsigned works. If you used the key information (author’s last name or the title of an unsigned work) in your sentence, do not repeat it in the parenthesis.

ESSAY PROMPTS:1. Discuss Montag’s relationship with Mildred. Is this a typical marital relationship in their culture? Discuss the role of family in the characters’ lives, particularly in relation to the TV parlor “families” and their nature and function.
2. Describe Clarisse’s effect on Montag and her function in the novel. How and why does she change him? Why does she vanish from the novel?

Fahrenheit 451
Censorship is the primary theme in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. In particular, it refers to the suppression tactics that the government uses against its citizens. For example, in Fahrenheit 451, the state prohibits people from reading and keeping books in their houses. That is the reason why firefighters are used to burning houses of people who own books, instead of putting the fire off. In Fahrenheit 451, censorship has adversely affected the society by granting the government and firefighters more power while denying citizens the freedom to acquire knowledge from books.
Censorship is dangerous and has affected society negatively in Fahrenheit 451. At first, Guy Montag was devoted and contented to be a firefighter since he believed that it was the most significant way of serving his society. However, after serving in his profession for ten years, he started asking himself why he burns books and houses of those who own them. That thought first came in his mind when Clarisse McClellan asked him, “Do you ever read any of the books you burn?” (Bradbury 3). Through Montag’s interactions with Faber, a retired professor, he came to understand that books were powerful and enabled people to gain relevant knowledge. Nevertheless, the government ordered their destruction since it wanted citizens to remain in darkness and believe what they see on televisions and listen from radios. On that note, censorship is dangerous since it fosters illiteracy, the lack of awareness and freedom, and extremism. Book lovers in Fahrenheit 451 formed an opposition group that was determined to do everything to make society a better place where individuals should be allowed to read books and think freely.
