The paper has one-inch margins all around. Each page has a header of last name and page number. The paper will be double-spaced throughout, no extra space between sections or paragraphs. The entire paper, including the heading and title, needs to be in the same type and size of font. This template uses Times New Roman 12pt font. Because it is easy to read, this font is definitely appropriate for college essays. Make sure that the essay is left aligned, not fully justified. One space between sentences is standard; however, double-spacing between sentences is okay. Follow your instructor’s preference in spacing and be consistent. Hit the enter key only once at the end of each paragraph.
In the MLA format, you document your research in parenthetical citations. This allows you to “acknowledge your sources by keying brief parenthetical citations in your text to an alphabetical list of works that appears at the end of the paper” (Gibaldi 142). Notice that in this brief citation the period goes after the parenthesis. The information in parenthesis should be as brief as possible. You will use the author’s last name or a shortened title for unsigned works. If you used the key information (author’s last name or the title of an unsigned work) in your sentence, do not repeat it in the parenthesis.

Choosing one of the following prompts, you will construct an essay. Make sure your essay is double spaced and in correct MLA format. You will submit your essay through schoology, and it will be checked on turnitin.com. The essay should include two direct quotes.
ESSAY PROMPTS:1. Discuss Montag’s relationship with Mildred. Is this a typical marital relationship in their culture? Discuss the role of family in the characters’ lives, particularly in relation to the TV parlor “families” and their nature and function.
2. Describe Clarisse’s effect on Montag and her function in the novel. How and why does she change him? Why does she vanish from the novel?
3. Guv Montag undergoes a character transformation as the novel progresses. Compare the protagonist the reader meets at the beginning of Fahrenheit 45\ to the character Montag becomes at the close of the novel. Use specific instances from the text to support your theories.
4. Examine Rav Bradburv’s possible motivations in writing Fahrenheit 451. In your discussion, be certain to use direct references to the text itself. Cite passages which support your viewpoint, using appropriate quotes to illustrate your points.
5. Rav Bradburv’s classic science fiction work contains numerous examples of ironv. Locate and quote at least three examples that clearlv illustrate Bradburv’s use of this literary technique in Fahrenheit 451. In your discussion, examine the effectiveness of the author’s use of irony to contribute to the overall theme of the novel.
6. One of the main themes of this novel is the danger of censorship. How has censorship affected this society? Why is it so dangerous? With whom does the power to censor really lie? What lesson can be learned from Fahrenheit 451 for our society today?
