Description
This story is about Maggie who is humble and innocent, Dee or Wangero who is her elder sister and is very educated, determined and worldly. Whereas, their mother who is referred to as Mama and Hakim who is Dee`s boyfriend whom she brings to her home for dinner. The story is about a conflict that arises after Dee comes from a visit from her college over some heirloom family possessions. Dee is a proud individual who gets what she wants out of life more or less but rejects her heritage. The story is narrated by Mama and she explains everyone`s qualities and traits in accurate details. In one place the author narrates: "She washed us in a river of make-believe, burned us with a lot of knowledge we didn`t necessarily need to know" (Barnet, Burto and Cain, p.103-110).
