Power of Authority
The ballad commences with an introduction of the main characters. The reader meets the king who apparently is in Dumferling, Scotland. In the first line the King "sits," meaning that he "reigns" and that he’s throne is symbolized by a "seat" of his power. The fact that he "sits" brings out the sense of being sedentary. He does not make any movements though his actions cause others to move. In the second line, the king’s drink is "blood red" translating to his power over death and life, and also the ease with which he has control over other people’s lives. Casually, he sends men to their demise as easy as one might take a glass of wine. Power of Nature
